Gitanjali (Sítnatas) (Yogyakarta: Diandra Kreatif, May 2019) is the very first translation of a Nobel Prize-winning work ever made into Dawan (Uab Meto), the most widely spoken native language of Timor (based on the number of native speakers). The translation project was planned and undertaken single-handedly by Yohanes Manhitu, a Dawan native speaker, writer and translator, from January 2006 to May 2016, and was finally published in May 2019. In the book, you will find the Dawan translations (103 poems) on the left side and those of Rabindranath Tagore himself (103 poems translated in 1912 from Bengali originals and published for the first time in the same year) on the right side, making it easy to compare. The Dawan translation was made from the edition published by The Macmillan Company (New York, 1913). Note: Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) became the first non-European (from Calcutta, India) to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (in 1913).
